Class Selections 2016-2017

During the 2016-2017 season, we are offering the following classes:

First Hour Classes

Use these guidelines from our chapter to help determine what class level fits your needs the best. If you have any questions, please contact the instructors. If you're new, you can contact them through our informational email, rochesterars@gmail.com

BEGINNING

DeeDee Heyer

Do you know someone who might enjoy learning how to play the recorder? We strive to work with beginners in a stress-free environment that can be very rewarding to someone embarking on this new musical adventure. Learn a few fundamental notes and you’ll be playing simple melodies relatively soon. Knowing how to read music is not required, since for those persons who do not read music, we can help them start from step one. You also help our Chapter towards building our membership. Bring a friend!

MOVING ON UP

Pat Hanley

Geared toward intermediate players learning or mastering C and F fingered instruments.  The class will be working on articulation and ensemble skills and expanding their knowledge of the full range of the notes on the recorder.

WE'VE GOT RHYTHM

Paul Breese-Gaerlick & Katy Mulvey

We'll enjoy playing music with interesting, perhaps challenging, rhythms from medieval times to the present. Open to anyone who plays both C and F-fingered instruments. Bass and great bass players are most welcome!

YOU KNOW THE NOTES AND THE RHYTHM -- NOW WHAT?

Mario Errico

For the more advanced players. Learn how to turn that piece into beautiful music. We will also explore what makes some melodies intrinsically beautiful.Challenge yourself with Charlton. Learn jazz rhythms and techniques. SATB required

Second Hour Classes

BEYOND BAROQUE

Neil Seely

Sample some of the many interesting and challenging great pieces that have been written for the recorder or have been arranged for recorder in the period since Bach.

. Limit 8. SATB required.

CELTIC SONGS & DANCES

Jessica Brennan

Immerse yourself in the haunting lullabies, jaunty folk tunes, and melancholic love songs of the Celtic nations (Ireland, Scotland, & Wales).  We will work our way through the many different musical styles that encompass the melodies of these lands and learn some basic ornamentation that gives Celtic music it's unique personality.  Vocalists also welcome; the beauty and humor in Celtic music should be shared, too!

BACH & SACRED MUSIC

Pat Hanley

Playing cantatas, motets, fugues, etc. - maybe some double choir pieces.  All instruments are welcome. Low instruments encouraged - to bring out that deep lush sound.  We will be working toward playing for a church service in the “spring”.

Additional Playing Opportunities

SIGHT READING CLASS, OUTREACH PLAYERS

Pat Hanley, Liz Seely

We will be offering Sight Reading Class on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, opposite the regular chapter meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays. Note that there is no Sight Reading class on fifth Tuesdays unless otherwise notified.

The Outreach Players will sometimes rehearse in this time slot.

OTHER CONSORTS

Varied

Many of our players have formed consorts and other small groups who play together. If you are looking for more playing opportunities, just ask!
